Two Unique Observations on Cell Phones and Driving

No boring statistics in this Hub

Hi Ariel,

I’m not going to bore you with statistics about cell phones and driving. This has probably been pounded into you. Telling you stuff you already know is insulting to a person of your intellect. That sounds trite, but in your case, it is true. Instead, I want to share a couple of observations that don’t seem to get a lot of attention.

My point of view

As you know, I drive around in circles in the city bus for the Transit. Driving around an average of 8 hours per day in an elevated seat with tons of windows allows me to witness many lapses in driving behavior. Some funny, most not. Every once in a while those lapses are my own.

On three separate occasions I’ve seen a person talking on his/her cell phone while running a stop sign or a red light. So what, right? People do that all the time, but here is the kicker that people don’t often think about: These people have no idea that they had run through the intersection and they continue thinking their skills are just fine- in fact probably better than average. Their perception of reality informs them that they can talk and drive with no problem, while reality begs to differ. Well, at least my perception of reality begs to differ.

Ironically, they probably comment how stupid other people’s driving is. What’s more is if you verbally pointed out their unsafe driving mannerisms, they would probably them entrench themselves further into their driving-ability delusion. People don't like being told they suck.

Be aware of your perceptions

The point I’m making is that what matters is your perception. If I could sit these three drivers down and show them a video of their potentially lethal driving skills, they would hopefully get an awakening and not do it again.

But I doubt that would happen. They are used to doing what they are doing and may slow down for a while, but will likely pick up their original behavior. They might think that if they just tried a little harder, that it would be OK. Or they just can’t seem to let that phone ring to voice mail for some reason.

People don’t want to change. They want to do what they want to do NOW and screw everyone else. They also don’t want to readjust their version of reality to a more accurate one. Realizing you are not as good as you thought you were is quite discomforting.

Well, guess what? We are usually not as good as we think we are. The sooner you get used to that concept, the better off you will be. (This is an excellent example of how tacit knowledge can be your friend or your enemy.) We are great at deluding ourselves; at least until we t-bone another car. Hard to ignore busted ribs and a smashed-in face. Sadly, if we don't re-evaluate our ideas from time to time, natural consequences are sometimes the only thing that can effect a change in our perceptions.

Treat driving as if it were lethal force because it is

You don’t need to wait for that to happen. Give your perceptions a good hard look and see driving for what it is. Realize that you are using lethal force every time you drive, and anything that takes your resources away from driving increases the likelihood of that lethal force getting out of control.

You wouldn’t take a gun out and start shooting with only a margin of consideration for others. You would make sure that the area behind your target was clear- every time. You would make sure your finger was off the trigger until you were ready to shoot- every time. You would never point the gun at anyone whom you did not intend to shoot- every time. You would give your gun your full attention- every time.

Same for driving. Lethal force is lethal force. A car can kill just like a gun can and you need give this lethal force on four wheels the same consideration as you would a gun.

Give your driving your full attention- every time. Even if that means diving into your tacit knowledge and making changes there. But not while you are driving! Save that for later.

My youthful experiences with phones

The other observation I would like to point out is that I didn’t grow up with cell phones. If I needed to contact someone, I waited by the phone, listened to the answering machine, or went without. And guess what? My world didn’t end! In my younger years, I didn’t even have an answering machine, yet life seemed no less bearable. Sometimes I used a CB, but they were highly localized especially in the mountains, severely restricting their use; but they were fun!

I did not drive around on a daily basis thinking, “Man, I need to get to a phone. I simply can’t wait until I get home to see who has been calling me. I better speed up and disregard my surroundings so that I can get to my ever-important phone calls.” Sure, there were times that getting to a phone was important and time was short, but that was uncommon. I doubt the phone calls made today are more important than the phone calls made before the advent of cell phones.

A matter of convenience

Ground yourself in a bit of reality, Hon. You are not so important that you must disregard the safety of others so that you are not inconvenienced for even one minute. I have had the fortune to live a life where I was forced to have some sense of delayed gratification. Today we have far less of that. We have become spoiled and throw a fit when we don’t get what we want right now; this holds true no matter what age one is. I have seen many fifty-year-olds acting like spoiled little brats when they consider having to pull over to answer the phone.

Are you a slave to your phone?

Do you want control of your life, or will you allow yourself to become mindlessly obedient to your phone? Do you want to make the tremendous efforts it will take to view your driving habits in a more realistic way, or will you keep taking comfort in your vehicular delusions? Texting and driving is only one of many ways you can allow yourself to become distracted.

I want to keep you safe until we meet again. It would be a shame if we could never be reunited because you wanted to avoid playing phone tag with your best friend.

Love You Oodles and Gobs,
Dad :)

I often make the analogy that driving behavior is similar to internet behavior. The reason that they are similar is that people are in a social and interactive environment - but yet they are insulated in their own personal environments at the same time.

If I rudely cut someone off in traffic - and then that person experiences, due to my poor behavior, "the straw that breaks the camel's back," and then goes home and . . . .(fill in your own blank equating "something awful")

Then I am at least partially to blame for what happens.

It's the same thing on the internet - and I'm a huge violator of what I know to be proper behavior. The other day someone made a totally shitty comment about a young woman who took her own life. I then got into a rage, and told that person that they were the most vile, disgusting, repulsive human being that I'd encountered on the internet. . . .and I was wrong for doing that. I shouldn't have come down so hard on that total stranger who was most likely trying to make a joke. Who knows how my comment affected them, or if it had any effect at all?

It's the same thing with driving.

Maybe your response to that shitty comment was wrong, but it likely was not lethal. Although, I do agree that like we share the road, we share the Internet and probably should take a less harsh approach to certain interactions. Easier said than done, though, huh?

I just added a killer video. I think you'll like it.

And, Todd, like we were talking about on a separate issue, this Hub started out, this time, with a rating of 55. I've had two viewers so far and am still at 55. Assuming you voted me up, that other person had to have voted me down. This has happened within minutes with several of my other Hubs no matter the subject. I think I have a hater.

Meh, what're ya gonna do?

Update. I looked again at my stats and saw this Hub's rating went down to 54, yet according to my Activity page, no one else has viewed this Hub since my last comment. How can a Hub change in rating if no one has viewed it to even be able to vote on the rating? Weird how that works.

Hey Willie, you could have a "hater," - but I don't think that that is it. They've changed the rating or scoring system since the Panda/Farmer update that Google uses to rank content for search engine results pages.

Here's a trick - sometimes if you start a hub and leave it unfinished for several days, but gradually add text or links or pictures, videos - whatever. . .you can debut a hub with a score much higher. I think I've published hubs that started out at 75 or so when I published them - but that was because they already had lots of content, and sat unpublished for several days, which allowed the scores to rise.

I agree. I seriously doubt that I have a hater in the house. My mistake was assuming the rating system as something that only readers could influence.

And what is this about farming Pandas? lol That's my joke for the day; I'll spare you until tomorrow. :)

I know I've seen you talk about joining Adsense - but you don't publish a whole lot (I've got more time for this stuff than most anyone) - so I'm going to guess here (no offence intended at all - the people that spend all of their time thinking about how the internet works don't have full time jobs) - you probably haven't made that first $100.00 Google Adsense payout.

Here's the deal - in Late February or early March Google made major changes to how it's search engine works. Those changes were called the "Panda," or "Farmer update."

What that means is that they changed the way your hubs, my hubs, anyone's hubs - rank in their search engine's search results.

So, if someone were searching for information about some topic of dog training - Google most probably would display your content LOWER in their search engine results. So now, if someone were searching for the information that YOU provided here on Hubpages - they'd be less likely to find YOUR content than they were before - so YOU make LESS from adsense.

Whether or not your hubs or my hubs actually were de ranked by Google is speculative so far as me or anyone providing evidence that proves that that is what they did - but if you've been looking at your traffic stats and Adsense income like I have - then you'd know for certain that that is exactly what has happened.

Lots of people that were making a thousand bucks a month here on hubpages from Adsense. . . .they aren't making but maybe a third of that now.

Personally, I've not made enough to notice a huge difference in income, but I've definitely noticed that my hubs about expensive acoustic guitars that used to get around ten hits of Google traffic before might get. . . .three to seven hits a day of Google traffic now.

Trust me, I've done everything that I've learned about crating good sales hubs, and promoting them. . . but they still get less traffic than they did before the pandaganda.

So basically Hubpages was deemed a "content farm" by Google, and everything on hubpages was ranked lower in search results.

Most of us are spending some time trying to correct that by . . . .flagging any hubs that look like spam, etc.

I've joined Adsense, but did not make the effort to market my Hubs. My primary goal is to inform my daughter and write about what I want to write about. If people like my Hubs, then they are welcome to them as well.

I figured, if I could make money based on the quality of my work, then great; if it doesn't, then I'm not out anything. I didn't come here to learn how to promote my Hubs. I came here to write as well as I can and be rewarded appropriately for it. Some people who are more political and Hub savvy, yet have sucky writing, are doing better than some good writers.

That is inherently wrong, but that is how most of life works. It isn't so much about the quality of the person or their acts, but how their acts are presented. Who can play the game the best.

Yeah - I do the basic twitter and facebook promotion for every single hub that I read or comment, unless, of course; I think it's just stupid or something.

I spent a huge amount of time on this website this past Fall and Winter. I probably put more than 30 hours into it on average during that time, weekly.

There's definitely a science to it that probably can't be taught in any school. I'm still learning it, and it's continuing to change "the rules" on us all as we go.

I'm not hardly making shit, but I like to learn things like this, and I'm going to be writing somewhere on the internet anyway.
